Storytelling has long been considered an art in and of itself. While anyone can tell a story, it takes great skill to captivate audiences and convey a message. Whether this is done through words, art, or images, a compelling story takes a great deal of craft. To truly understand everything needed to convey a story well, one must take a look at the storytellers popular today. There’s an event in Omaha, NE that’s already been in full swing this month that you’ll definitely want to check out if you love stories or hope to be a potential storyteller yourself. So take a break from Spaces Apartments in the next few weeks to check in at Storytelling at KANEKO. You can read more about their event below, or at their website ! About The art of storytelling takes as many forms as there are storytellers. From the classic modes of storytelling — the written, drawn, and spoken word — to the captivating movement of film and the art and design of visualizing information in this new world of nearly unlimited data. As a distinctive human trait, storytelling permeates all aspects of our daily lives. Found in cultures throughout history, storytelling is how we share and create meaning with one another. KANEKO will celebrate the evolutionary, emotional, and creative benefits of this sacred and honored tradition. Storytelling at KANEKO explores the creative process of storytelling and how design informs both the content and context in which stories are conveyed. Literature, illustration, cartooning, comics, theatre, dance, folklore, archiving, oral histories, photography, and film are among the forms of storytelling highlighted in this exhibition and its ancillary programs. It isn’t always easy to find an amazing place to eat in Omaha. While our city is packed with great restaurants, finding the true gems can be difficult. Luckily the internet has made locating the corners with truly memorable stops all the easier. We’ve put together a short list of three places right near Spaces Apartments that are June must-tries for anyone into food. Best of all, they’re all local spots, so you’ll be supporting the community! (Reviews courtesy of Yelp.) The Drover “This is easily one of the best places in Omaha for a steak. It's an old-school place with a casual feel. It's got a dark atmosphere with western decor. Service is attentive and friendly, but it's not an upscale place with upscale-type service. Either arrive right when they open or make reservations. The wine list is decent. There's some good offerings by the glass. There's several appetizer options. There's numerous daily specials. With each steak, you automatically get soup or salad bar and a side (baked potato, fries, etc.). And, of course, there's complimentary bread. The salad bar was scanty and lackluster. Had I realized, I probably would've opted for the soup instead. Choosing a steak was difficult. So many options! I finally settled on one of the daily specials, a bone-in NY strip. You can get your steak plain or whiskied, their specialty. Why would you do anything other than their special way with whiskey? The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. The steaks are the star here by far. All in all, a good meal was had here. If you're wanting a real Omaha steak, this is the place to come.” - Samantha G. Blue & Fly Asian Kitchen “Stopped by Blue and Fly for lunch today. It's been on my list for a while and I wanted something different from the places I usually go. Decor was clean and classy, service moved smoothly. I had the lunch portion of Hot and Crispy Chicken with steamed rice and egg drop soup for $5.95. The soup came with crispy noodles which was a nice touch. I'm usually a little hesitant about fried dishes at Chinese places because I've gotten some sketchy cuts and soggy bits before, but the chicken was wonderful - nice big chunks with a light, crispy batter. The sauce was a sweet chili base with a little kick and the portion size was perfect. I did find the fancy chopsticks a little unwieldy at first (the porcelain ends changed the weight a little) but quickly got the hang of them. All in all a great deal! For more adventurous eaters there's plenty of authentic Chinese dishes on the menu as well. No fortune cookies here, but a cute little candy came with my tab. I'll definitely be back!” - Layne G. Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant “I saw this place quite a while ago and made a mental note that I wanted to go try it sometime, but forgot about it. We had a friend in town visiting, he saw it on Yelp and wanted to go. Having not eaten Ethiopian before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was excited to give it a try. We went with a combination platter. They make it for 2 people, but they were nice enough to just scale it up for the 3 of us for a small extra charge. I honestly don't know what most of the food was, but it was excellent. There wasn't anything on the plate I didn't like. It was a great value. For less than $8/person, we were all able to get absolutely stuffed. I highly recommend Lalibela and look forward to going back many times.” - Matthew D. What’s your favorite restaurant around town? The heat is on the rise this May here in Omaha, NB. Luckily, at Spaces Apartments we have the best cure for the heat. Our sparkling swimming pool is one our favorite resident features and offers a fantastic place to relax during the summer. Why not check it out with some friends or family this weekend? And while enjoying the water, there’s an excess of classic pool games to try out to amp up the fun! Of course, please remember to be respectful and keep pool rules in mind while trying out one of these games; but make sure to have some fun! Invisi-bottle All you need is an empty and clear two-liter plastic bottle for this one. Fill the bottle with some pool water and then line all players up on the edge of the pool. One player throws in the bottle, and when the splash is heard the rest must turn around and try to find it. While it may not seem difficult, the bottle blends far more with the pool than you might expect! Shark in the Pool Similar to tag, this game is one of the few that allows players to freely move in and out of the water. One player takes the role of the shark and attempts to tag any in the water. If the shark gets someone, they become the new shark. Being true to the name can add some more fun, as adding a snorkel and fins to the shark player amps up the game. And remember, players outside of the pool can only remain on land for 5 seconds to keep things fair. Freeze Tag — Water Edition A variation of the on-foot freeze tag, this game consists of one person being and remaining ‘it’. They then begin to chase down others, freezing them with a touch. Players frozen must remain immobile. However, if a player is underwater they cannot be tagged ‘it’, and if they swim past a frozen swimmer while underwater they unfreeze them. Those are just a few of our favorite pool games! Let us know if you have any of your own in the comments.
